Note: The tour covers the entire building with stairs and partly uneven paths in the outdoor area. A lift is available. Barrier-free access to the HfG Archive is via the upper entrance, which you can reach by following the concrete road that leads past the bus stop on the left around the building.

Inge Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill founded the Ulm School of Design 70 years ago. It existed until 1968, during which time the profession of industrial designer developed at the HfG, which is still valid today. The university building was designed by Max Bill. It was opened in 1955 in the presence of Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus.
The building is designed as a reinforced concrete skeleton construction. Externally, the main feature is the exposed concrete, which was still viewed very critically at the time of its construction. The ensemble of buildings on Hochsträß has been a listed monument since 1983.

The owner of the building, the Ulm School of Design Foundation, has extensively renovated the building and reopened it as the Ulm School of Design Centre. In its permanent exhibition, the HfG Archive, a department of the Museum Ulm, tells the eventful history and important designs of the legendary institution, including the ‘Snow White’s Coffin’ and the stacked crockery.

On Open Monument Day, admission to the exhibitions in the HfG Archive (on the 3rd floor of the building) is free. The exhibitions are open from 11.00 to 17.00. You can see the current special exhibition ‘al dente. Pasta & Design’ and the permanent exhibition “From zero hour to 1968. Ulm School of Design”.
