Design and Architecture: A Task for Democracy? Special guided tour in dialogue
On Democracy Day, the HfG Archive looks back on the early years of the Academy of Design (1953-1968). Founded in memory of their siblings and friends Hans and Sophie Scholl, Inge Scholl (1917-1998) and Otl Aicher (1922-1991) dedicated themselves to rebuilding a democratic community in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), founded in 1949. Together with Max Bill, they established the University of Design in 1953, which we can now regard as a place of democratic history. Initially founded as the successor to the Bauhaus, subjects such as history, politics, and sociology were intended to complement the design disciplines and help train students to become independent thinkers and responsible individuals. The guided tour on this day uses the architecture of the university building and a few exemplary designs and texts to explain how design contributes to a better environment and thus to greater human satisfaction.
