A new Spelling of Museum. Part 2: M-Z
From M for memes to Z for numbers: Museum Ulm’s guest appearance in the neighbouring kunsthalle weishaupt continues with the exhibition ‘Museum neu buchstabiert. Part 2: M-Z’ (A New Spelling of Museum. part 2: M-Z) from 23 November 2024 to 21 September 2025.
What do Alamannic pearl necklaces from the 5th-7th centuries have to do with today’s gold cufflinks? Curiosity, amazement and the joy of beautiful, skilfully crafted things are deeply human – and the leitmotifs of this exhibition.
The Lion Man has also been on display there since January 2024: one of the oldest known figurative works of art in the world and a masterpiece from the UNESCO World Heritage Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Alb.
Knitted stitches by a contemporary artist next to 1800-year-old Roman clay lamps: when fundamentally different objects from art and cultural history are shown side by side in a unique way, surprising connections are created across space and time.
Paintings, textiles, everyday objects, sculptures and fragments, tools, stories and incidents from everyday museum life can be discovered with all the senses across the boundaries of collection areas. From Mirabilia to X-Ray, the new alphabet of museum work allows different approaches to the exhibits on display and offers glimpses behind the scenes of museum practice. All museum employees have contributed to the concept by suggesting terms that they associate with the museum.
The exhibition is supplemented by changing presentations on new themes. The exhibition kicks off with figurative casting vessels from the Middle Ages: so-called aquamaniles from archaeological excavations in Ulm’s Olgastrasse, which are being shown in cooperation with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in the Stuttgart Regional Council.
